APHANES FLORIBUNDA

Meaning:- Aphanes (Gr) Inconspicuous, unnoticed.
Floribunda (L) Abounding in flowers, flowering freely
General description:- Rather robust, usually greyish-green, hairy. annual.
Stems:-
1) Up to 15 cm. erect, rather robust, densely leafy.
Leaves:-
1) Sessile, more or less 3-fid.
a) segment, each 2- to 3-lobed.
2) Lower, with short petioles.
3) Stipules, large, not or scarcely imbricate, concealing the flowers.
a) lobes, triangular, clearly adnate to the base of the leaf and forming an
amplexicaul cup.
Flowers:-
1) Inflorescence, more or less sessile.
1) Fruiting hypanthium, (incl. sepals) 2.7-3.4 mm.
2) Sepals, erecto-patent.
Key features:-
1) Lower leaves, petiolate.
2) Stipules, not or scarcely imbricate.
Habitat:- Limestone screes and rock ledges, patches of meadow, dolines, 500-
1200 m.
Distribution:- A few recent records from the W. of Crete and Rodos, perhaps
overlooked elsewhere -Widespread but scattered in the Mediterranean region,
distribution uncertain.
